5 Tips for Winter Wellness
Health and Wellness Tips for Winter
1. How to Stay Active in the Cold
There was a point in my life where I literally believed that going outside during the winter just wasn’t a thing. Is this you right now? Because if so, I’ve been there. I honestly had no idea that people actually wanted to go outside.
Naturally, I’m a summer gal (I mean, aren’t we all?). When the winter came, I’d count down the days until spring and it was ~ awful ~. After the pandemic hit in 2020, my perspective on winter changed. We were all locked inside with nowhere to go, no one to see, and nothing to do.
My family and I decided to get creative.

Okay, that’s me with my sister on the right, and my parents on the left, but you’d seriously never know because we’re all bundled it.
My best cold-weather wellness tips are to get outside! Whether you go for an outdoor walk in your neighborhood, stop by your local nature preserve, ice skate, sled, or take advantage of an unusually warm day (AKA 32 degrees or higher) and go on an outdoor run. There are as many January wellness activities as there are June ones (at least if you live in the Northern hemisphere otherwise it’s actually summer) – you just have to get creative!

2. Invest in Your Winter Wardrobe
Have you ever heard the quote:
“There’s no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothing”
I honestly live my life by this philosophy. One of my favorite health and wellness tips for winter includes getting active outside, and wearing the right outfits! There is a winter activity for everyone, you just want to make sure you’re dressed appropriately.
I know clothing can be sooo expensive. At the end of 2020, I had just graduated college. I was ready to move on to the next phase of my life so I quite literally donated my entire closet to the Goodwill and it has been such a struggle to restock everything!
Mostly because finding quality pieces at an affordable price is nearly impossible and if you do, it’s likely on sale and sold out (welcome to my life). With that being said, I have found a few winter staple pieces that I absolutely love that I can’t live without that help me stay active in the winter!
Let’s chat about winter wellbeing tips for your wardrobe:
Target: Women’s Tech Touch Knit Gloves – Wild Fable™
Winter gloves are a must – gloves with a touchscreen ability are such a luxury! I love being able to take my phone with me on winter walks and listen to music or a podcast. A nice pair of tech-friendly gloves makes this super easy and these winter gloves are so affordable!
If you’re looking for a high-quality pair that will last a long time, these Kohl’s Women’s Lands’ End Fleece Winter Touchscreen-Compatible Gloves might be a better option. I always find that Target products have an amazing price tag but don’t last the longest!
Women’s Excelled Hooded Long Puffer Coat
A long winter coat for outdoor winter activities is honestly my secret weapon to not hating being outside in the winter. This will by far be your most expensive investment. Winter coats can range from $50-$400!
Trust me when I say that if you spend at least $100 retail, and snag one on sale, you won’t be disappointed!
This coat from Kohl’s is currently on sale for $80 and I think that’s a fair price. I personally wouldn’t spend more than $115 on a long winter coat max because I think a $100 coat has the same quality as a $400 winter coat, without the hefty price tag!
Women’s Lands’ End Faux-Fur Hood Quilted Long Down Winter Coat
Here’s another great option, on sale. If it’s astronomically priced, wait it out, especially toward the end of a season – they always go on sale!
Women’s SeaCycled™ Saltwater Nylon Duck Boot
Having a warm pair of winter shoes is also a must. Trust me when I say cold toes are my least favorite part of winter. I’ve had these Sperry boots for yearsssss now and can confirm there is a significant difference in quality between these and the knock-off ones you can find in T.J. Maxx.
Trust me when I say to spend a little more, and get a lot from your investment!

3. Winter Wellness Vs. Summer Wellness Activities
Likewise, there is obviously a huge difference between our winter activities and our summer activities. If you learn to embrace the seasons for what they are, you will find more wellness in your life.
In the summertime, I love outdoor workouts, hiking, weightlifting, and more. My summer activities are heavily cardio-based and outdoor-inspired which I love!
On the contrary, as the season changes to winter, I find myself leaning more toward resistance training, dumbbell workouts, indoor walks, and my newest love – pickleball!
Here are a few winter ideas to keep you moving when the weather isn’t the best!
Winter Health and Wellness Tips – Exercise Ideas
- Get a 3 month pass to your local community center! You can enjoy the benefits of an indoor track, fun activities like basketball, volleyball, or pickleball, and invite a friend to join you!
- Skip the dinner catch-up, and meet your friend at a local nature preserve and go on a snowy, winter walk for 45-mins. Reward yourself with a hot latte together after!
- If you have a dog, invite a friend to take your pets for a walk in your neighborhood.
4. Winter Skincare Tips
In addition, another way we can improve our health in the winter is to take extra care of our skin. Contrary to popular belief, just because the sun isn’t out as much doesn’t mean our skin doesn’t need the love and attention we give it in the summertime!
Here are my best winter skincare tips:
Don’t forget about sunscreen!
Sunscreen is just as important in the wintertime as it is in the summer! La Roche-Posay Toleriane Double Repair Moisturizer, 2.5 fl oz from Walmart is seriously amazing. I love to wear it under a simple powder and my daily moisturizer and I can’t even tell it’s there. Unfortunately, it is so expensive and not budget-friendly at all.
I struggle to find sunscreens I love and this one is the only one I truly do. I’ll be honest and say that I am not the best about following this tip (mostly because my favorite sunscreen is SO expensive and not practical for daily use on a budget) but I know that it’s important for winter wellness!
If this sunscreen is completely out of your budget, I totally understand. Here are a few sunscreens that I tried that I don’t love, but also don’t hate that you might like. Be sure to do your own research, because everyone’s skin is different!
Always moisturizer
In addition, I have two kinds of moisturizers – a daily moisturizer and a deep ‘winter” moisturizer. I use my daily moisturizer every morning and every night as a normal part of my skincare routine. If you find that your skin is dried out from the dry, cold air, or you’ve been out in the cold, I always like to pack on CeraVe’s heavy-duty Moisturizing Cream.
It’s heavy-duty, and perfect for those extra cold days when your skin needs a little TLC.
Tip: I always buy the extra big moisturizers whenever possible because you get more bang for your buck and it lasts forever!
Protect your skin from the cold!
Anytime I go outside for outdoor winter walks, one of my best-kept winter wellness tips is if it’s below 32 degrees outside (aka freezing temperatures), always, ALWAYS cover your face as much as you can!
I like to wrap a scarf around my face and neck. This will help protect your skin from the cold temperatures which is vital to your skin health! It’s also just a good precaution to keep in mind because it is cold outside!
5. Seasonal Affective Tips
Lastly, let’s talk about seasonal affective tips during the winter months. Once March rolls around, I definitely can feel myself getting impatient for summer. I’m sick of bundling up to go outside, I’m ready for summer foods, and everything in between! Here are a few wellness tips for winter to help when the winter feels just a little bit too long!
Wellness Tips For Winter – Seasonal Affective Tips
- Get out in the sun as much as you can! Your body needs that vitamin D. I am not ashamed to admit that I will literally sit in a sunny spot in the house whenever possible a.) because I’m cold and b.) to soak in that vitamin D because it’s essential to our health!
- Don’t forget to eat the rainbow (aka all the fruits and veggies). I swear fruits and veggies do not taste as good in the winter as they do in the summer, but I always try to incorporate them into at least one of my meals every day.
- Change up your recipes! One of my favorite things about winter is all the soups and bread. I love trying out new recipes, it keeps things exciting and makes the winter feel more bearable!
There you have it ladies, my best-kept secrets for winter wellness. I hope this post inspired you to get outside, even when it’s cold, try out new recipes, invest in your winter wardrobe, and don’t forget about your skin! See you in the next one xoxo.
